Create Your Success: Use “One Step Today”

Keep taking steps forward until you soar!

“The project is so big. I feel tired already,” Andrea told her cousin Raul. . . . How can you get the big projects in life done? Focus on “one step today.” We’ll use the S.T.E.P. process.

S – start small
T – take out resistance
E – energize
P – persist

1. Start small

I use a process I call The Easy Part Start. Pick something that is easy to do. Perhaps, write the table of contents for a report.

I focus on “One Step Today.”

Not five steps tomorrow.

When I’m writing a book, I get some writing done each day.

I keep a log. Even if I only write 100 words, that is “One Step Today.”

2. Take out resistance

If you make your daily task too tough, you’ll create resistance. I invite you to observe your own patterns. What brings up resistance in you? See if you can use a strategy to get around it.

When I’m doing grades for my graduate students, I listen to empowering music. This cools down the discomfort of calculating grades.

What can you do to reduce your resistance?

3. Energize

One fast way to gain energy is to take a break. Shift gears. If you’re writing something, close your eyes and listen to music. Or take a walk around the block. You’ll come back with surprising, renewed energy.

4. Persist

There is one word I see everyday: “Persist.” This word is on my bathroom sink and I see it as I brush my teeth every morning. Today is the 76th day in a row that I’m writing my new book. This has been the toughest book I’ve written so far (of 11 books).

Why? It deals with the seven vulnerabilities my close friend “Joe” suffered, and Joe killed himself. The book is designed to save lives. I’m really dealing with grief while writing this book.

And so I persist.

On the topic of persistence, my book Nothing Can Stop You This Year includes the “12 Elements of the Compelling,” which are strategies so that you keep up your momentum and create great success. It’s important that you become an expert (for yourself) in persisting.

To persist is essential. Why?

No great thing is created suddenly. —Epictetus

Here’s a secret about persisting:

Work is love made visible. —Kahlil Gibran

When you love what you do, you already have an advantage. You have a source of energy.

Remember, one step today!

many joyful moments,

Tom
